HISTORY:
Belle Isle, formally known as Hog Island, was declared public
domain in 1701 by the founder of Detroit, Antoine de la Monthe
Cadillac. In 1768 Lieutenant George McDougall was granted official
permission to live on the island by King George III. After living on
the island for one year, McDougall purchased the island for five
barrels of rum, three roles of tobacco, three pounds of vermilion, and
a belt of Wampum. Even though McDougall purchased the island, the name
remained Hog Island until 1845, when it was renamed Belle Isle.
The City of Detroit purchased the island in 1879 and
designated it a public park. The following year, 1880, the City
contracted the services of famed landscape architect Frederick Law
Olmstead, designer of New York's Central Park, to develop the park, and
design a plan for the island.
Seven years later, 1887, the first Belle Isle Casino was
built. It was not until 1904 that the premier industrial/office
building architect for this area, Albert Kahn, designs and constructs
Whitcomb Conservatory and the Belle Isle Aquarium. In 1908, Kahn
designed and constructed the new Belle Isle Casino, which cost
$135,000.
The Belle Isle Bridge was completed in 1923 and was renamed
the Douglas McArthur Bridge in 1942, in honor of the famous WWII
general.
Finally, in 1992, racing hits the streets of the island at the
11th annual ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix. The race has taken place
at the island ever since.
